John Nathionel Cowart II

November 21, 1949 ~ May 22, 2020 (age 70)


John N. Cowart, II, 70, of Marshall passed away May 22, 2020 in Longview. He was born November 21, 1949 in Lufkin to Truman Edgar Cowart and Emma Joan Williford Cowart. Mr. Cowart served in the United States Army for 6 years, serving in Vietnam for 2 years where he was a POW until he escaping through the jungle into a rice patty crossing through and into an area that had a US Army Field Hospital and was able to be rescued. After healing, he served the remainder of his time with the Army in Germany serving as a mechanic and cook. He came back to the US and tried to find work in a couple of places and then tried to reenlist in the Army and was told that he had been out for too long and to try the Navy, so he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served 12 years as a cook, even serving the Captains Quarters and Officers onboard. John married Peggy Jill Davis on December 15, 1975 in Baytown, TX. He enjoyed collecting stamps, baseball cards, spoons and money from the various areas of the world he had traveled to. He loved watching old John Wayne movies on Encore, well, really any old western playing on Encore.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy J. Cowart of Marshall; daughter: Angela Allen and her husband Le of Atlanta, TX; son: John N. Cowart III and his wife Bertha of Marshall; four grandchildren; siblings: Jolene Banis and her husband Donald of San Antonio, Jerry Cowart of Engleside, TX, Janice Chapman of Poteet, TX, Jeffrey Cowart of San Antonio, and Jacqueline Mora of San Antonio; as well as a number of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and extended family members. John is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Judith Crawford and brother: James Cowart.
A time of visitation with his family will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 29, 2020 at Sullivan Funeral Home, with a Celebration of his life at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2020 at the Colonial Chapel of the Sullivan Funeral Home, 100 East Travis St. Marshall, TX with interment to follow in the Veterans Field of Honor at Algoma Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: John N. Cowart III, Le Allen, Lonnie Jones, Chris Sipes, Dustin Kuhn, and Quinton Warner.
