Services will be conducted for Doris Gillihan Woods, age 90 of Marshall, TX on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at 2:00 pm at the Wesley United Methodist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Thad Carter. Visitation will be at the church on Wednesday from 1:00 pm until service time. Graveside services will be conducted at Algoma South Cemetery.
Mrs. Woods entered into rest on Saturday, May 6, 2017 in Marshall. She was a native of Marshall, a graduate of Marshall High School, Texas Womens University, and she attended graduate school at University of Texas-Arlington. She retired from the Texas Department of Human Services as a social services supervisor. She was a pioneer and great advocate for health and human services in Harrison County from 1956 until she retired in 1996.
Some of her many accomplishments in that area include: she was appointed to the first Mental Health Board for Harrison County (this board led to the Marshall-Harrison Co. Health Dept.) creation of the Mental Health-Mental Retardation Office, Listening Line, as well as Aid to the permanently & Totally Disabled, and adding of Child Welfare to Family Services.
She was an original organizer for United Churches Care, a charter member of Wesley UMC, as well as a founder and charter member of the Pilot Club, actively serving the club for 27 years.
Her family is very proud of her accomplishments with her job, her church, and her community.
She was preceded in death by her loving daughter, Lilla Kathleen Murphy Vowles; her parents, James and Bobbie Gillhan, and an infant son. She is survived her sister, Barbara Lewis; nephew, David S. Lewis and wife Sue; nieces, Donna Marshall and husband Bronson, and Diana Williams and husband Jerry; numerous other great nieces and nephews, a host of friends and her loving caregiver, Ginger Wiltse.
Pallbearers will be Rick Wiltse, David S. Lewis, Jim Lewis, Jerry Williams, David Smith, Adam Marshall, Jerrod Williams, and Bronson Marshall. Delacy Andrews,Sr. will be an honorary pallbearer.
Memorials may be made to the Wesley United Methodist Church.
