Donald Dudley Swofford, Jr. arrived at his final destination of May 13, 2018 and is now with his Lord and Savior. Services will be conducted for Donald on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at 4:00 pm at Sullivan Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Ryan Berryhill and Dr Jeff Magruder officiating. Visitation will be at the chapel from 3:00 pm to service time.
On February 23, 1961,Donald became Dudley and Margaret McClelland Swofford’s first child. Born at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Kittery, Maine. Donald attended schools in various parts of the United States and the republic of the Philippines. While living at Clark Air Base in the Philippines, Donald and his family were able to greet the American POWs as they were released from North Vietnam in 1973. While overseas he attended the World Boy Scout Jubilee in Hokaido, Japan. After graduating from Derby High School, Derby, Kansas in 1979, Donald moved to Marshall with his family. He attended Panola College, receiving his Associate’s Degree in Forestry Science. He returned to East Texas Baptist University where he was awarded his Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1989. Donald taught in the Houston ISD for 24 years before returning to Marshall where he taught for 2 years. He was recently active with the Cypress Basin Club of the Texas Master Naturalists.
He is survived by his parents, Margaret and Dudley; his sister, Paige S. Wilson and husband Jeff; one nephew, Josh Wilson, also survived by aunts, Jean Dodge and Sally Swofford. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Baptist Church’s Chapel Fund and or the Humane Society of Harrison County.
