Charles E. “Dick” McCarty 91, passed away on Thursday April 4, 2019, peacefully after living a long and successful life. Dick was born April 21, 1927 in Marshall, Texas to James Washington McCarty and Hilda Fisher McCarty.
Graveside services will be conducted by Sullivan Funeral Home at 1:00 PM on Sunday April 7, 2019 at Fairview Cemetery, Marshall, TX. Officiating will be his nephew John McCarty retired minister.
Dick joined the Merchant Marines at age 17 after his mother signed a consent form and served for 2 years. He was later drafted into the United States Army and served from 1950 to 1952. After serving in the military, he enrolled in Texas Technological College and obtained a Civil Engineering degree in 1958. Upon graduation, he accepted a job with the Texas Highway Department and retired in 1982 after working 34+ years.
In retirement, his favorite pastime became feeding the local deer each morning and watching football. He loved his Red Raiders and Dallas Cowboys.
Mr. McCarty was preceded in death by his parents, James and Hilda McCarty; his wife, Dorothy McCarty, daughter, Mary Ann Blanton; his sister, Lanelle Ellis, and two brothers, Emory McCarty and David McCarty. He is survived by his brother, Pete McCarty; daughter, Janet Becan; two sons, Bill McCullough and Jim McCarty; eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to MD Anderson Cancer Center.
