Loving father and grandfather. Charles “Chuck” Abma grew up on a forty acre farm in San Joaquin CA, he was born Sept. 6, 1936 in Wasco, CA, he enjoyed farming, fishing, repairing old cars and being a country boy.
His first language was Dutch since his father was born in Holland.
At 2 years old he decided he'd be a chemist when he grew up. He enjoyed a brilliant career as an organic research chemist at WITCO/ US Peroxygen, and was granted several patents.
In 1991 his company, WITCO, relocated him to Marshall where he built his own home with the help of only one friend. He found a welcoming, caring, wonderful community and friends in Marshall.
He retired early to enjoy life on 5 acres, lots of time spent, gardening, always enjoying the fresh vegetables he grew. He volunteered at Christus Good Shepherd in Marshall, was an active member at the local Lions Club and a member at Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Up until his stroke late 2019 he drove out to Northern California every year and was rarely ill.
Chuck is survived by his daughter, Allison Grinstead and her husband Earl of Albany, CA; grandchildren: Emily Alexis Grinstead, Zak (Zoey) Grinstead and Ian Grinstead; nephew: Chris Abma and niece: Peggy Abma as well as a host of extended family members and friends.
A service to Celebrate His Life will be held at 11 a.m. on February 4, 2023 at Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Marshall, TX with Rev. William Bill “Rusty” Rustenhaven officiating.
